My elderly parents are visiting Venice with me. They aren't very mobile - can they still do a gondola ride? Is it hard to get in and out of the boat?
I really want them to have this experience, but I don't want anyone to get hurt. Are there specific docks that are "low-step" or easier for seniors?
It's definitely possible, but you have to be careful. Most gondoliers are very strong and helpful, and they will literally hold your parents' hands to steady them.
However, some docks are steeper than others. The main "stations" like Vallaresso or Danieli usually have more staff to help. I'd suggest looking at Gondola Rides in Venice https://alle.travel/en/venice/category/gondola and maybe messaging them to ask which departure point is the most accessible.
Also, try to go at high tide if possible, as the boat sits higher and there's less of a "drop" from the dock. It's a very gentle ride once you are seated, so it's actually perfect for seniors who want to see the city without walking!
High tide! I never would have thought of that. That's a brilliant tip. I'll look into the departure points and try to find the easiest one for them. Thank you!
