Title: Best place to retire: Med vs Pacific
Post by: Tive on December 12, 2025, 06:35:25 AM
My husband and I are having a debate about where the healthiest place to retire would be (hypothetically). He is obsessed with the "Blue Zones" and wants to go to a Greek island for the olive oil and weather. I am arguing for New Zealand because I feel like the outdoor lifestyle and healthcare system are better there. Which country actually has the better longevity stats?

That is a tough one because both are famous for being healthy but for different reasons. The Mediterranean diet is hard to beat, but New Zealand has excellent modern healthcare and very low pollution. I was actually curious about this myself and looked up life expectancy in Greece vs New Zealand (https://georank.org/life-expectancy/greece/new-zealand) on Georank. Surprisingly, New Zealand has been pulling ahead in the rankings recently. You might want to show him the graphs; the data supports your argument for the Pacific, although the Greek weather is definitely better.
