Upgrades and Modifications / Custom cargo carrier
April 23, 2017, 02:44:07 PM
Yesterday my buddy helped me weld the bumper reinforcement on and helped with welding on the cargo carrier.  I took a stock cargo carrier from Sportsman Warehouse and cut off about 7" of the steel tube, then welded a baseplate on so that the carrier will sit directly on top of the bumper as much as possible.  And then added a little custom touch on the other end of the tube. :)

The only other thing I might do is add some sort of aluminum block on each end that way the weight on the ends is transferred directly to the bumper.

Any feedback/concerns are greatly appreciated!

thanks

CampLite Travel Trailers / Re: 2018 CL RBS review

That's great to hear.  Did they happen to fix the license plate or water tank issue on yours?

I removed the pic after I realized you could still see my license plate number.

I don't think you should be nervous about the trailer, you just have to keep your expectations in check.  The RV industry is not regulated and I don't know if a single brand exists that has "high quality".  Our trailer looks like it was built as fast as humanly possible and hence the quality issues.

For example, interior lights are not centered, they don't even take the time to measure!  Caulk is missing in several places in shower and around sink.  The trim is coming off in places or cut to short in places or not even screwed in (like around our dinette).  The freshwater tank has the outlet almost halfway up the tank making it so you can only use about 1/2-2/3rds of the tank.  Hoses are kinked in places that I'll need to fix...

So... so far nothing "major" but it's obvious they are trying to build as fast as possible with little regard for workmanship.  Would I buy it again?  Probably...  since no one else seems to be any better from what I can tell.  But it is very frustrating to spend over 30K on a trailer and deal with crap like this.

Did more investigation and once again, this appears to be nothing more than lazy/sloppy workmanship.   >:(  The freshwater tank has a low water "trough" where you could easily get almost every drop out of the tank.  However, the folks at Livin Lite opted to weld the outlet on the side of the tank far away from the trough.  I have no idea why except that maybe it took them 30 seconds less time and about 1ft less of hose.  Stuff like this is really frustrating.  I'll be calling Livin Lite to try and get this addressed under warranty.  I seriously doubt they will do anything though and I'll be left taking the whole tank out myself and trying to fix this properly.

While on vacation last week we found that in our 36 gallon freshwater tank only the top 2/3rds is usable.  The way the draw is configured the pump starts sucking air when you get below 2/3rds.  This leaves a huge amount of water in the tank which is useless.  I've not yet checked but I'm guessing you can't drain all of the water from the tank either since the drain is also mounted on the side of the tank.

Has anyone else experienced and/or have any ideas on how to resolve?

One other update... although the camera works great during the day at night I'm not all that pleased with it.  There is no way to turn off the infrared lights and even with the monitor dimmed it is way to bright at night.  And you mainly get a very whitewashed picture at night, you can hardly even make out headlights of other cars when passing.

How hard was it to wire in the camera to the running light?  Any risk of leaks?

Thx,Mitch

It was super easy to tie into running lights.  I just drilled a tiny like 1/32 size hole to run the wires through and filled with silicone.

The camera gets power from one of the running lights on the back of the trailer. The monitor plugs into the cigarette lighter. We have put about 1,500 miles on it the last week or so and it's been working great

The camera I have is the Voyager WVOS43 wireless camera.  I took the rig for a 10 mile test run yesterday and the camera worked great.   I was cruising at about 65 and the picture remained clear the entire time.  We are leaving this afternoon for a 10 day 3k mile trip so when I get back I will report on how it did... so far though it looks pretty good.

Ok, so apparently on the 2018 model they moved the tail lights to the box and off of the bumper.  So now the license plate bracket is no longer in the right spot.
#26
The problem is the bracket is 2" above the taillight so I need to move the entire bracket.  It's just a dumb thing to do imo...  you would think they would at least install the license plate bracket so you can install a license plate!

I just got home to WA state after travelling to Iowa to pick up our 21BHS.  In general we really like the trailer but there is plenty of sloppy workmanship that would make you question spending 30K on a trailer.

For example:

  • The license plate holder is in a place that is TOTALLY UNUSABLE (see pic below).  .
  • Water was leaking through the wheel wells where sealant was missing.
  • one of the access door latches was barely screwed on and it seems to have come apart enough to not work quite correctly, even after I tightened it up.
  • Trim in the bathroom is coming off where it doesn't appear to be attached correctly.

Like I said, in general it seems pretty good but there are plenty of little things to make you wonder if anyone is actually checking the quality of these things.  I have no idea how I'm going to get the license plate on without moving the bracket and leaving a bunch of holes.  :(

I just installed a Voyager wireless one on our 21BHS.  We leave in 2 days for a long trip and I'll report back how it works....

It finally showed up... just in time thank goodness!

My dealer has been great so far and they have been calling me every day.  Early last week my dealer was told the trailer had shipped and only today did he discover after calling again that the trailer is still sitting at the factory.  My dealer has been calling them almost daily but at one point it took him over a week to get a response from the factory.
