Title: Towing a 10.0 w/ a Subaru Outback
Post by: dream34 on May 16, 2017, 12:50:16 PM
Anyone here towing a 10.0 with an Outback? I have a 2013 Outback and the wife has a 2016. We are considering either an 8.0 or a 10.0. with a rear deck. Any issues towing the 10.0 with an Outback? Are electric brakes a necessity? How do they do hauling the trailer in moderate to extreme topography (through hills and mountainous regions)?

We're in the same boat! We've got a 2011 Outback, and have been assured my multiple sources (our Subaru dealer, a couple of mechanics, and a couple of RV dealers) that we won't need electric brakes. That said, our manual says we need them for anything over 1,000 pounds, so....but again, our Subaru dealer said he wouldn't worry about it unless it's over 1,500 pounds, so at this point we're thinking we don't need to worry about them. We're looking at a used 10.0 that doesn't have them. If we were buying new, we might put them on anyway, just to be safe.

I tow my QS 10 with my 2014 Subaru Forester. My unit did come with electric brakes but I didn't have them installed. It takes a few trips to get use to the tugging feeling on your car when you are towing the camper. The biggest thing I have noticed is the speed. You can't drive any faster than 65 mph and because of that when planning camping trips I have to avoid expressways and drive more on two and four lane roads. You can drive on interstates but I feel I am creating a hazard for anxious drivers behind me.

If you are hauling one with a Forester with no issues then I should be good as gold as the Outback has a higher towing capacity than the Forester. What type of terrain have you traveled on? I'm positive that I should have no problems on the flat land along the gulf coast, but I want to be sure that I will not have issues when traveling in regions with mountains or hills.

I have only driven on flat roads, never mountain passes. If you are going through mountains, you may want to go with the electric brakes.

We are pulling our 10.0 with a Hyundai Elantra Touring. We have electric brakes though and have planned a trip to Cape Breton! Big hills there! We do get a tugging feeling when pulling but have had no issues stopping. Our car is rated for up to 1000 pounds without electric brakes and up to 1500 pounds with electric brakes. I agree with the comment about speed. Our highways here in Ontario, Canada are posted for 100km per hour and I found it was difficult to go any higher than that speed.

Your Subie dealer is giving bad advice.
But, all dealers tell people whatever they want to hear.
The limit is in writing, everything else is opinion.

Just food for thought....

my TV for my 8.0 is RAV4 with the V6 engine. Acceleration is not a problem but slowing down, especially downhill, well, I just did not like the feeling very much. I believe brakes are not adequate on the RAV4 anyway.

So with not much difficulty and cost I installed electric brakes on the camper. This made a huge difference and I recommend this to everyone.

I would favor the older Subaru for towing. I think your 2016 has a CVT transmission where the older one will still have a 5 speed auto. Even with the older one don't tow in overdrive, it is not a good plan.
