During Microsoft's Xbox Developer Direct 2025 presentation, streamed live on the official Xbox YouTube channel, fans were treated to new details about several highly anticipated games. While titles like South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Doom: The Dark Ages were expected, the real surprise came with the announcement of a previously unannounced game: Ninja Gaiden 4. The long-awaited sequel in the acclaimed Ninja Gaiden series is set to launch in Fall 2025.
Co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 promises to deliver the franchise's trademark brutal, fast-paced action. PlatinumGames, known for action titles like Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Nier: Automata, adds its distinctive style to the project, marking a unique collaboration with Team Ninja.
The game will take place years after Ninja Gaiden 3, featuring two protagonists: the returning Ryu Hayabusa and a new character, Yakumo. Players will control both characters, with their storylines converging in a dramatic clash. Yakumo is introduced as a member of the Raven clan, a rival to Ryu's, with the two ninjas on a collision course. Ninja Gaiden 4's presentation focused on Yakumo, describing him as a new face in the ninja world capable of standing alongside Ryu as a potential "Master Ninja" of the next generation.
Gameplay footage showcased the series' signature combat mechanics—fast, precise, and weapons-based, with plenty of wall-running and platforming to highlight the ninja skills. Both characters will have distinct playstyles, ensuring variety for players familiar with earlier Ninja Gaiden titles. A key gameplay feature will remain the emphasis on timing, with parries leading into brutal, acrobatic finishing moves, reinforcing the series' reputation for difficult but rewarding combat.
Ninja Gaiden's legacy dates back to the 1988 arcade release and the NES version that followed. The franchise is known for its challenging difficulty and has evolved through various iterations, including the 2004 reboot for the Xbox that reshaped the modern version of the series. Ninja Gaiden games, especially the 2004 and 2008 titles, became closely associated with Xbox, with the iconic Ryu Hayabusa even appearing in the Dead or Alive series.
In addition to Ninja Gaiden 4, the Xbox Developer Direct also showcased an updated remaster of Ninja Gaiden II, titled Ninja Gaiden II Black, available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC today. There was also the reveal of Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, a retro 2D platformer set for a Summer 2025 release.
While a firm release date for Ninja Gaiden 4 has yet to be announced, it is expected to launch in Fall 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC.
